May 2022
Item 14.5 Immunization Agenda 2030
Honorable chair, distinguished delegates,
I speak on behalf of the World Medical Association (WMA) representing over 9 million doctors
worldwide.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been dramatic regression in many immunization
indicators. Children, despite being the group least at risk from COVID-19, unfortunately bear the
largest impact on their health from those indirect consequences. Children are at risk of high
morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable diseases as evidenced by the recent measles and
polio outbreaks.
We call on Member States and WHO to act urgently to accelerate and strengthen essential
immunization services by ensuring equitable access and distribution of vaccines to all, improve
vaccine access to marginalized and remote populations as well as data systems, strengthen vaccine
delivery infrastructure, and enhance disease surveillance for all vaccine preventable diseases.
Thank you.
