WMA Lifts Suspension Imposed on President Elect

The World Medical Association General Assembly decided today to proceed to the inauguration as President of Dr. Ketan Desai from the Indian medical association.

The meeting in Fortaleza, Brazil decided to lift the suspension of his inauguration which was introduced in October 2010 when Dr. Desai was unable to attend for his inauguration at the Assembly in Vancouver in 2010.

The mechanism for this inauguration, after the current President and President elect have served their term, will be decided at the WMA Council meeting in Tokyo in April 2014.

Dr. Desai was elected President in 2009 for the 2012/11 term.

Charges had been filed against Dr. Desai. These have now been withdrawn at the request of the Indian prosecuting authorities.
