URGENT – Support to Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali
Your Excellency,
We are writing to you on behalf of the World Medical Association (WMA), the global federation of National
Medical Associations representing millions of physicians worldwide, acting for the advancement of good
practice, medical ethics and medical accountability internationally.
We are informed of Dr. Djalali’s highly critical condition, nearing death held in prolonged solitary
confinement for over 100 days. His execution remains imminent despite a state of health extremely
worrying. Dr. Ahmadreza Djalali was sentenced to death on alleged espionage charges in October 2017.
Various sources of information unanimously confirm that Djalali is a specialist in emergency medicine
peacefully pursuing his profession and corroborate that his conviction and sentence were based on a
confession extracted under torture and after an unfair trial.
The treatment inflicted on Dr. Djalali is nothing else then barbaric, inhuman and unworthy of any state
governed by law. We wrote to you several times to draw your attention on his case. We are profoundly
dismayed to see such a relentlessness despite the constant international mobilization in support of Dr. Djalali
over the last years. We join the call of the UN human rights experts to put an immediate end to torture
against Dr. Djalali and urge the Iranian Government, parliament and judiciary to halt the use of solitary
confinement as a form of punishment and to impose a moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards
its abolition.
Dr. Djalali needs immediate health care and we ask you to take steps to do so as a matter of urgency.
