WVA
WVA was initiated from the first International
Veterinary Congress at Hamburg in 1863.
Today, the WVA represents over 500,000
veterinarians through its 95 member associations
across six continents

• WVA offers veterinary technical advice on global
guidelines/discussions papers produced by
International Health Agencies.
• Publishes different press release and articles in peer-
reviewed journals
• Produced together with HealthforAnimals (the global
animal medicines association) an online resource
entitled Animal Health Matters to educate and to build
greater awareness of the most pressing issues in
animal and human health.

WVA and WMA collaboration plan
In October 2012, the WVA and the WMA signed on a
Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in a unified
approach to tackle common health issues to improve
Global Health.
This initiative encouraged a number WVA and WMA
members to adopt this model of collaboration and to sign
similar agreements between Veterinary and Medical
associations at national level to use the One Health
Approach in their countries.

WVA/WMA GLOBAL CONFERENCES
ON ONE HEALTH
2013 – World Veterinary Association (WVA) and the World
Medical Association (WMA) agree to organize a Global
Conference on One Health (GCOH) to promote the One
Health Concept to a wide audience of veterinarians and
physicians, and veterinary and medical students.
2015 – 1st GCOH in Spain in May with support of Spanish
Medical and Veterinary Associations
2016 – 2nd
GCOH in Japan in November with the Japanese Medical and
Veterinary Associations
2019 – Discussions on going with the Brazilian Veterinary and Medical
Associations to hold the 3rd
GCOH in Brazil (Not Confirmed)

End Rabies Now Campaign
Since 2015, the WVA and WMA publish
Together joint press releases to mark
the World Rabies Day that takes place
annually on 28th
September 2018.

international scheduling of ketamine
WVA and WMA expressed their opposition regarding the
re-classification of ketamine, as this could lead to
ketamine no longer being available to veterinary and
medical clinicians, especially in remote areas.

Veterinarians have the scientific, medical training and
the statutory accountability as well as the opportunity
and the responsibility to engage in a wide range of
employment fields that deliver services to the
