Main achievements in Role as Treasurer of the British Medical Association / BMA (working, of
course, with the chief officer team and the senior management team)
1. Instigated and completed a senior management review and restructure
2. Am the Chief Officer lead on a BMA Transformation Programme, starting July 2013 and
nearing completion, covering for example
a. Human resources, Legal department and Financial
b. I.T. (including infrastructure, communications, support services etc)
c. Committee support
d. Internal working patterns etc
3. Led a 12-18 month BMA Governance review leading to the establishment of a new Board of
Directors for the BMA group, (supported by >95% of the Annual Representative meeting.)
4. Led on staff pension review across the whole BMA Group, ensuring the long term stability
of the scheme and the Group finances.
5. Initiated a “project” to increasing BMA income from “non-member based subscriptions”
which is now approaching its target of £5 million annually
6. Improved the finances of the BMA from a position of significant annual deficit to one of
annual surplus. While at the same time
a. Being able to freeze member annual subscription rates for the past 3 years
b. Spending more on member services and
c. Increasing the levels of financial support to elected members e.g. honoraria rates
7. Introduced a Group wide electronic expenses system in 2014
8. Am the lead Chief Officer on a major project of BMA member involvement and member
started in 2015, now called “Your voice, Your BMA” due to report to the 2017 Annual
Meeting.
