The World Medical Association invites you to attend the WMA Declaration of Helsinki Revision: Final Expert Meeting, which will take place on 15-16 August 2024 in Washington, D.C., USA, at the Westin DC City Center, 1400 M Street, NW. Register here.

Developed in 1964 by the World Medical Association’s General Assembly, the Declaration of Helsinki (DoH) is a set of ethical principles on human experimentation developed for the medical profession. In 2022, the WMA appointed a workgroup to begin the process of revising this seminal document. To encourage as much global participation in the revision process as possible, the WMA is collaborating with its members to host a series of regional/expert meetings as below:

Following a two-year revision process led by workgroup members and observers from more than 20 countries and enriched by five regional conferences, a dedicated conference on research in resource-poor settings, a global public consultation, and comments from WMA members, the DoH workgroup will present the revised draft to some of the leading minds in medical ethics for a final reality check.

Co-organized by the American Medical Association (AMA) and the WMA, this high-level discussion will provide a final opportunity to analyze the revised draft of the DoH for thoroughness and consistency before the document is submitted to the WMA Council and, if approved, to the General Assembly for adoption. Please note that this event will be held in English, and it is open to all WMA members and invited guests. The meeting will be held in person. A virtual option is not planned.

Following the decision made by the Council in Seoul, the WMA is enforcing the Code of Conduct (Chapter 8, Clause 8.2 of the WMA Procedures and Operating Policies), which reads: “All attendees of WMA hosted meetings, events, and other activities, including social gatherings are expected to exhibit respectful, professional, and collegial behaviour. To this end, every participant is asked to sign a code of conduct when registering for the event.” Please consult also Anti-harassment policy (Chapter 8, Clause 8.3 of the WMA Procedures and Operating Policies).

Each participant must fill their own registration and will be asked to agree to the Code of Conduct individually. Please note that no one else may register on behalf of the participant.

Hotel group rate

The AMA has arranged a group rate for hotel rooms at the Westin at $189 for single/double occupancy and $359 for suites. If you are planning to attend this meeting, please book your room after the registration. The link will be available on your registration confirmation page. 

The deadline for hotel reservations is July 17, 2024.  If necessary, individual rooms may be cancelled up to 72 hours prior to arrival date at no charge.

Co-organized by the South African Medical Association, the American Medical Association and the WMA, the WMA’s Regional Meeting in Africa on the Revision of the Declaration of Helsinki in Johannesburg will provide an opportunity for organizations from the African region to hear presentations and provide input on the current draft of the DoH. Please note that this event will be held in person in English and is open to all WMA members and invited guests. En raison de la pandémie de COVID-19, la session scientifique de l’Assemblée générale de Cordoue 2021 (en ligne) a été reportée. Elle a eu lieu le 17 septembre 2021 de 11 h à 14 h 45 UTC. Le thème était « Les médecins dans le processus de don et de transplantation d’organes : Défis éthiques« .

Le Comité exécutif de l’AMM, en sa réunion du 22 juillet 2020, a décidé que l’Assemblée générale de l’AMM ne pourrait pas se tenir en présentiel compte tenu du contexte pandémique relatif à la covid-19. Le Comité exécutif a décidé de tenir les réunions de l’Assemblée générale, du Conseil ainsi que celles des Comités de façon entièrement virtuelle.
La recrudescence de la pandémie de covid-19 ne nous permet finalement pas de prévoir une session scientifique hybride (mi-présentielle, mi-en ligne) le 23 octobre 2020 à Cordoue, comme nous en avions l’intention. Le Comité exécutif de l’AMM, en accord avec nos collègues espagnols, a décidé de reporter la session scientifique à l’année prochaine. Nous vous informerons ultérieurement de la nouvelle date. En outre, l’Assemblée générale et les sessions du Conseil auront finalement lieu la semaine suivante, à partir du 26 octobre. Vous trouverez plus d’informations sur la page Manifestations.

La pandémie de Covid-19 ne nous permettra pas de tenir notre session du Conseil à Séoul comme prévu. Votre Comité exécutif a discuté de la marche à suivre avec l’Association médicale coréenne (KMA) et a décidé le 8 janvier 2021 de transformer les sessions du Conseil et des Comités en réunions virtuelles.

Afin de pouvoir traiter tous les points prévus initialement en deux jours et demi, il a été décidé d’étendre la session du mardi 20 avril au vendredi 23 avril 2021. Comme pour l’Assemblée générale d’octobre dernier, les réunions débuteront à 11 heures UTC et devraient prendre fin à 14 heures UTC. Plus de détails sont disponibles dans la zone spéciale membres.

Here is the invitation by the British Medical Association. However, following the recommendation of the British Medical Association (BMA), the WMA Executive Committee (ExCo) decided to convert the General Assembly, London 2021 into online, due to the continued uncertainties and restrictions in place in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s scientific session was held on 7-8 October 2021, prior to the business sessions and the theme was « Global response to antimicrobial resistance, in the context of COVID-19« .

Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major threat to global health and the efforts to prevent its spread has reached a critical point. The added disaster of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the global response to it, has important implications for tackling antimicrobial resistance. 

Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health challenge that impacts all countries and all people. AMR infections are estimated to cause 700,000 deaths globally each year and are predicted to rise to 10 million by 2050 if no action is taken. The rise of AMR will also lead to people suffering for longer as infections become more difficult to treat. Challenges in addressing AMR, such as lack of access to clean water and sanitation, poor infection and disease prevention, poor control in health care facilities, farms and communities, and poor access to medicines and vaccines, have been exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The COVID-19 pandemic provides an opportunity to reinforce key actions which address the rise of AMR. As the world sees the consequences of not having treatments for infectious disease, a renewed focus on optimising the use of antibiotics is vital. The pandemic response has shown the importance of infection control and prevention, and the need to develop accurate diagnostics. COVID-19 has also confirmed that the environment in which humans and animals interact has an impact on health outcomes, illustrating the need to take global action through a One-Health approach. The handling of future pandemics will need all actions that are aimed at slowing down the development of AMR to be firmly in place.

The WMA Medical Ethics Conference will be held from 2 to 4 October 2018, prior to the WMA General Assembly, co-hosted by the Icelandic Medical Association. The participants to the WMA General Assembly will join this conference on its scientific session on 4 October. More details are available here and the registration will be open soon.
