WMA Expresses Concern Over Imprisonment in Egypt of Canadian Doctor

The WMA has expressed its concern about the arrest and imprisonment in Egypt last week of Canadian doctor Tarek Loubani.

Dr. Loubani, who works as an emergency doctor in Canada, was arrested on August 16 during the outbreak of violence while travelling through
Cairo on his way to Gaza.

Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal, Chair of the WMA, said: ‘The details of Dr. Loubani’s arrest and imprisonment are unclear and we join the Canadian Government in urging the Egyptian authorities to clarify the situation. Grave concern has been expressed about the safety of Dr. Loubani and the possibility of wrongful arrest. The absence of more detailed information will continue to add to our worries and concern’.
