WMA Annual General Assembly


12-15 October – Radisson Hotel, Montevideo, Uruguay

The annual General Assembly of the World Medical Association will be held at The Radisson Victoria Plaza Hotel, Montevideo from 12 to 15 October 2011.

The programme of the meeting will be:

Wednesday 12 October: Committees
Thursday 13 October: Scientific Session
Friday 14 October: Council Session
Assembly Ceremonial Session
Saturday 15 October: General Assembly

The theme of the scientific session is ‘Tobacco Cessation’. Keynote speakers include Dr Tabaré Vázquez, internationally known oncologist and former President of Uruguay and Dr. Tom Glynn, Director of the American Cancer Society.

Dr. José Luiz Gomes do Amaral, from Brazil, will be installed as President of the WMA for 2011/12.

Among the issues on the agenda at the meeting are:

  • End of life care
  • Guidelines concerning torture
  • Prison conditions and tuberculosis
  • The global burden of chronic disease
  • Social determinants
  • UN Summit on Non-Communicable diseases, September 2011
