Item 19 – Social Determinants of Health (SDH)
Honourable Chair, Distinguished Delegates,
Despite accounting for a significant portion of health outcomes, health inequities stemming from
social determinants of physical and mental health have persistently gone unaddressed. COVID-19
pandemic has highlighted and exacerbated these inequities and failure to address these social
determinants will continue to lead to great economic and human costs.
We urge Member States to implement the WHO operational framework for monitoring social
determinants of health using a multisectoral approach, including physicians. We call on the WHO to
provide further technical support and guidance to assist with integration into national strategies.
We also support the call to “build back fairer”, urging Member States to focus on sustainable,
resilient Universal Health Coverage systems which comprehensively address the needs of
vulnerable populations and the differential impacts of climate change.
