Item 17.2 Global Health for Peace Initiative
Honorable Chairperson, Distinguished Delegates,
I speak on behalf of the World Medical Association (WMA), representing 9 million physicians
globally.
We believe that health can be a bridge bringing parties in conflict together towards peace and
support the WHO Global Health for Peace Initiative.
The WMA was founded against the backdrop of war atrocities and the abuse of medical personnel
with the most dreadful human rights violations. We emphasize the critical importance of protecting
the core ethical principles of the medical profession, to respect the standards of international
humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Conventions and its Additional Protocols, of
international human rights law, as well as the UN Security Council Resolution 2286.
We urge all parties in conflict to guarantee the principles of humanity, whereby human suffering
shall be prevented and relieved, and of impartiality, whereby health care shall be provided with no
discrimination.
