Welcome President-Elect Dr. Mungherera
One of the highlights of annual meetings of volunteer organizations is the election of officers to lead the group in the years to come. The General Assembly meeting of the World Medical Association (WMA) in Bangkok was no exception. Dr. Margaret Mungherera was elected president for 2013-2014. (see WMA leaders’ page) She will serve as president-elect during 2013 and be installed as president in at the meeting October 2013 in Fortaleza, Brazil.
Dr. Mungherera is a psychiatrist at Mulago Teaching and Referral Hospital, Kampala, Uganda. She currently has responsibilities as the Clinical Heal, Directorate of Medical Services (departments of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. In addition, she is Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, Mulago National Referral Hospital in charge of psychiatry emergency services.
Dr. Mungherera has a distinguished record of service to the medical profession. She is a founding member of the Association of Uganda Women Medical Doctors and was the first woman to be elected Honorary President of the Uganda Medical Association since its formation in 1963. In addition Dr. Mungherera is the longest serving president of the association having served from 1998-2005 and again from 2010 to date.
In a world where it is essential to find ways to work together Margaret has proven skills. In 2000 she was the catalyst in initiating discussions between National medical Associations in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. A move that led to the formation of the Federation of East African Medical and Dental Associations.

Of interest is the fact that she has five siblings, four of whom are doctors. Her father is a retired civil servant and community development worker and her mother served for more than 30 years as General Secretary Uganda YWCA.
In talking with Dr. Mungherera about her vision for the WMA what comes through loud and clear is a dedication to bringing the disparate member organizations of the WMA together. Hearing this articulate physician, there is no doubt in my mind that she is up to the task.
Margaret and I share an interest in Rotary. I am a former member and she is a current member and leader of the Rotary Club of Kampala West. Hearing her talk her hopes for the WMA I am reminded of that standard for Rotarians, the four-way test of the things we think, say or do.

- Is it fair to all concerned?
- Will it build goodwill and better friendships/
- Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
